Gabes –The city of Gabes in southern Tunisia witnessed, at dawn on Wednesday, cases of suffocation among a number of residents as a result of gas leakage from the chemical complex, coinciding with a power outage, which brought back to the forefront the debate about the environmental risks that the region has been facing for years.
Environmental activist Islam Al-Zarli explained, in a video clip he posted on his Facebook page, that the leak occurred around three in the morning, attributing the cases of suffocation to emissions related to sulfuric acid, which prompted a number of residents to close the road leading to the chemical complex in protest against the repeated accidents.
These developments come in the context of continuous demands from Gabes residents and environmental activists to dismantle industrial units that they consider to be a source of air pollution and health and environmental damage, in light of accusations that the authorities are delaying the implementation of their pledges related to reducing emissions.
The file of the chemical complex in Gabès is one of the most prominent environmental issues in Tunisia, as organizations and activists accuse it of causing air and water pollution, and harming the marine and agricultural sectors, which raises repeated demands to find sustainable solutions to protect the health of the population and the environment.
