Kankoosa –The fuel crisis in Mauritania has extended to Kankosa district in Assaba state, amid increasing citizen complaints about long queues in front of gas stations, and accusations of speculation in the sale of fuel and its high prices in the informal market.
Local data indicated that gas stations have been witnessing increasing pressure for weeks, in light of the influx of large numbers of citizens to supply fuel, while a number of residents spoke of difficulties in obtaining the required quantities, which was reflected in their movements and daily activities.
Citizens pointed out that the limited quantities distributed led some consumers to wait for hours, with accusations of selling fuel outside the usual channels at prices higher than the official prices, which exacerbated the crisis and raised demands for tighter monitoring of distribution operations.
These developments come at a time when fuel prices in Mauritania recorded four consecutive increases between March and June 2026, which was reflected in the cost of transportation and economic activities in a number of regions.
On the other hand, the Minister of Energy and Oil, Mohamed Ould Khaled, confirmed in previous statements that fuel stocks are available and that supply operations are proceeding normally, considering that the queues recorded in front of some stations are “unjustified,” and stressing the continued follow-up of distribution operations to avoid any imbalances.
Citizens are demanding urgent intervention to ensure regular supply of gas stations, and to limit speculation, in order to ensure stability of supply and alleviate the suffering of the population.
