Rabat –The petition demanding a return to the legal time (GMT) in Morocco entered a new phase, after the national committee supervising the initiative began compiling the final regulations for signatures coming from various regions of the Kingdom, in preparation for submitting them to the Presidency of the Government.
According to circulating data, regional coordinators have begun handing over the records of the petition’s signatories, within the framework of a procedure subject to the requirements of Organic Law 44.14 relating to submitting petitions to public authorities.
This concerns an initiative calling for a permanent review of the adoption of GMT+1 additional time, and a return to working according to the legal time during the winter, amid the continuing public debate about the impact of the additional hour on the daily lives of Moroccans.
According to the same data, the signatures will be subject to a legal audit process to ensure compliance with the required data and regulatory conditions, especially reaching the minimum specified at 4,000 signatures.
This development comes in conjunction with the publication of a recent study completed by the National Federation of Consumer Associations on the effects of adopting GMT+1, which monitored a number of repercussions related to sleep, transportation, and study, especially during the winter season.
The study indicated that a number of students and families consider that the current timing imposes morning commute in difficult conditions due to darkness, and also affects the quality of sleep and concentration during morning school periods.
On the other hand, the debate continues between those who consider that adopting GMT+1 contributes to rapprochement with Morocco’s economic partners, and those who call for a return to the seasonal time system that adopts GMT in the winter and GMT+1 in the summer.
Observers believe that the issue has returned strongly to the forefront of public debate in Morocco, awaiting the outcome of the legal procedure for the petition and the extent of the government’s interaction with the demands of the signatories.
