Algeria –Jeune Afrique magazine reported that recent diplomatic developments suggest a gradual shift in the approach of Algeria and the Polisario Front to the Sahara issue, in light of accelerating international dynamism and growing American pressure, which makes the proposal for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty take the lead in the discussion within the international track.
According to the report, the ongoing negotiating path sponsored by Washington is based on a new reference established by the UN Security Council through Resolution No. 2797 issued in October 2025, which reaffirmed the priority of a realistic and consensual political solution. The magazine points out that the diplomatic discussion no longer revolves around the option of a referendum in its traditional form, but rather is focused on the details of the autonomy initiative as the frame of reference proposed within the political process led by the United Nations.
The report highlighted that the Moroccan document, a shortened version of which was circulated in the media, proposes an expanded model of autonomy that grants the region broad powers in managing local affairs, in exchange for the state retaining sovereign powers, such as defense, foreign relations, and currency. The project also includes institutional mechanisms, including the creation of an elected regional council, and practical arrangements for transferring and activating powers.
In a dimension of a political and humanitarian nature, the magazine indicated that the proposal addresses the issue of reconciliation, by talking about a possible amnesty that includes leaders of the Polisario Front, in addition to organizing the return of the residents of the Tindouf camps within a gradual and framed framework.
The magazine also considered that Algeria’s participation in the Madrid meeting, within a negotiating process that places the Moroccan initiative at the heart of the discussion, represents a striking indicator of an evolution in its traditional position, especially in an international context characterized by the reshaping of the balance of alliances. She believes that this engagement, in light of American diplomatic pressure, may reflect an awareness of the need for a more pragmatic approach at this stage.
It is expected, according to the same source, that the rounds of dialogue will continue during the coming weeks, with preparations for a detailed session in May, which Washington hopes will pave the way for consolidating a framework agreement that defines the features of the final settlement. How to manage this potential transformation at the internal level in Algeria remains one of the most prominent challenges at hand, if the option of autonomy becomes established as a reference solution within the international path.
