The head calledLibyan National Unity GovernmentAbdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba called for strengthening intelligence coordination between the Sahel and Mediterranean countries, stressing that confronting the growing security threats requires a collective approach based on exchanging information and drying up the sources of funding for extremist groups.

Al-Dabaiba’s statements came today, Monday, April 6, 2026, during the opening of the second conference of military intelligence leaders for the African and Mediterranean Sahel countries, held in the capitalTripoliWith the participation of a number of countries, including Türkiye, Algeria, Tunisia, Sudan, and Niger, in addition to Italy, Malta, Greece, France, and Spain.

The Libyan official stressed that security coordination is no longer an option, but rather a necessity imposed by the nature of the current challenges, especially in light of the growing activities of extremist groups that benefit from the fragility of the security conditions in some areas of the Sahel and rely on complex, cross-border financing networks.

This regional meeting aims to unify efforts in the areas of combating terrorism, organized crime and irregular migration, in addition to strengthening border security and developing monitoring and cooperation mechanisms between the concerned agencies.

For his part, the Director of the Libyan Military Intelligence Department warned of the southern border becoming open corridors for various threats, including weapons smuggling and the movements of extremist groups, calling for a move from exchanging information to building a more effective joint security system.

This meeting comes in a complex regional context, as the Sahel region is witnessing an increase in the activity of groups linked to extremist organizations, taking advantage of conflicts and the weakness of state institutions in a number of countries.

The conference also coincides with the continuing political division within Libya between two competing governments, which increases the complexity of the security landscape and poses additional challenges to stability efforts.
