Tunisia –The Tunisian Organization for Consumer Guidance confirmed that the decline in the inflation rate to 5.1 percent did not have a significant impact on the purchasing power of citizens, in light of the continued rise in prices of a number of basic materials and daily products, in addition to disturbances in supplying the market with mineral water.
The head of the organization, Lotfi Al-Riahi, explained that the prices of poultry meat have witnessed increases during the recent period, in addition to the rise in the prices of some consumer products such as shampoo and deodorants, in addition to recording increases ranging between 30 and 60 percent in the prices of some imported medicines, which has increased the financial burden on citizens, especially patients who depend on continuous treatments.
Regarding the mineral water crisis, Al-Riahi indicated that the problem is not related to a lack of production, but rather is due to disturbances in the distribution and supply system, as a result of difficulties in providing plastic bottles, electricity outages, in addition to the high demand during the summer.
The head of the organization confirmed that no official increase in mineral water prices had been recorded, explaining that the rise in prices circulating at some points of sale is due to the intervention of intermediaries and irregular traders, as the price of a bottle rose between 100 and 200 millimeters, in addition to some families resorting to storing large quantities, which increased pressure on the market.
The Tunisian Consumer Guidance Organization called for tightening control over markets and determining profit margins to limit speculation and abuses, expressing its expectation that the supply of mineral water to the market will gradually improve in the coming days.
