NouakchottFive local gold prospectors were killed in the desert of Tiris Zemmour state in northern Mauritania, while search teams were able to rescue six others, while combing operations are still continuing to find a seventh prospector who is still missing.
According to media sources, the vehicle carrying 12 prospectors broke down in the “Mak Al-Kalb” area while they were returning from the “Al-Foula” area designated for private prospecting, on their way towards the city of Zouerate, the state capital.
The sources reported that search teams found the six survivors near the broken down vehicle and they were in good health, while the bodies of five of their comrades were found at varying distances from the location of the vehicle, after they left it in an attempt to search for help.
Rescue teams are still continuing searches in the desert area to find the last missing prospector, amid difficult field conditions, while no final toll or additional details have yet been issued regarding the circumstances of the accident.
