AlgeriaThe Algerian Ministry of National Education announced the adoption of English as the sole foreign language in the third year of primary education, while postponing the teaching of the French language to the fourth year, starting from the 2026-2027 academic season, in a step that reflects the continuing shifts in linguistic policy within the educational system.
The announcement was made by the Minister of National Education, Mohamed Saghir Saadawi, during the opening of the national symposium on preparing for new school entry, where he explained that the decision falls within the framework of reviewing the organization of academic subjects with the aim of improving academic achievement, in addition to enhancing the volume of English language, especially in the technical divisions and the foreign languages division.
Although the Ministry justifies the decision with pedagogical and organizational considerations, this step brings to the forefront the debate about the motives for rearranging foreign languages in Algerian schools, and whether it is based on a comprehensive scientific evaluation of students’ results, or whether it comes in the context of broader linguistic and strategic choices that the country has witnessed in recent years.
Observers believe that delaying the teaching of French in exchange for giving English greater priority reflects an official trend to redraw the map of foreign languages in education. However, the success of this transformation remains dependent on providing qualified human resources, developing curricula, and ensuring equal opportunities between educational institutions, so that the reform does not turn into a formal change that does not reflect on the quality of learning.
The decision comes at a time when calls are increasing for a comprehensive reform of the educational system, based on evaluating the effectiveness of educational programs and their outcomes, far from simply modifying the order of subjects or changing the years of their teaching, in order to ensure that students are prepared for the requirements of higher education and the labor market in a changing international environment.
