ارتقت جوزفين بيكر أسطورة موسيقى الجاز الأمريكية من طفولتها الفقيرة لتصبح الفنانة الأعلى أجرًا في أوروبا… ثم جاسوسة هاوية تعمل في المغرب ضد ألمانيا النازية خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية. لطالما أحبت بيكر المغرب وكان لها منزل ثان في مراكش. في يناير 1941، وصلت إلى الدار البيضاء حيث عملت مع شبكة المقاومة الفرنسية واستخدمت علاقاتها لتأمين جوازات سفر لليهود الفارين المد النازي في أوروبا الشرقية. كتبت بيكر رسائل سرية بالحبر غير المرئي على أوراقها الموسيقية ، و كانت تسافر مع ما يناهز 28 قطعة من الأمتعة والكلاب وقرد أليف – مفسرة إنه كلما كانت أكثر وضوحًا، قلت الشكوك بها! عن سبب اختيارها المخاطرة بحياتها كجاسوسة هاوية ، تذكرت النازيين في باريس وهم يصرخون عليها ، “عودي إلى إفريقيا” ، وقالت “الشيء الذي دفعني هو كرهي العنيف للتمييز بكل أشكاله”. نحيي شجاعتها والتزامها بالحرية!
بينما نختتم #WomensHistoryMonth ، نتذكر حقيقة #Mra_W_Gadda مثل جوزفين بيكر. حياتها المزدوجة الجريئة كجاسوسة في الحرب العالمية الثانية في شمال إفريقيا تذكرنا بالأشخاص الرائعين الذين يمثلون 200 سنة من الصداقة بين الولايات المتحدة والمغرب.
Josephine Baker was an American jazz legend who rose from an impoverished childhood to become Europe’s highest-paid entertainer…and then an unlikely spy operating in Morocco against Nazi Germany during World War II. Baker had long loved Morocco and had a second home in Marrakech. In January 1941, she arrived in Casablanca where she worked with the French Resistance network and used her connections to secure passports for Jews fleeing the Nazis in Eastern Europe. Baker sometimes wrote secret messages in invisible ink on her sheet music, and at other times traveled with up to 28 pieces of luggage, dogs, and a pet monkey – saying the more conspicuous she was, the less anyone would suspect her! In describing why she chose to risk her life as an amateur spy, she recalled Nazis in Paris yelling at her, “Go back to Africa,” and said “the thing that drove me was my violent hatred of discrimination in any form.” We salute her courage and commitment to freedom!
As we conclude #WomensHistoryMonth, we remember true #Mra_W_Gadda’s like Josephine Baker. Her daring double life as a World War II spy in North Africa remind us of the amazing people who comprise our #200years of friendship and of the links between the U.S. and Morocco.
